Takeshi’s Castle time!
I’m sure you’ve heard of this show. It’s this dubbed Japanese show, wherein more than 50 contestants face many different challenges. Some of them are just suuuuuper hilarious because of the way the contestants look after the challenge. Some challenges even make you scream out of suspense because some challenges have “monsters” which try to run after you. It was soo funny and many people liked it that the QTV 11 channel decided to bring it back. Watch this for the best of Takeshi’s Castle!

Care for some Carebears?
oh yes, the Carebears are back. I don’t know where I used to watch them when I was young, but I do remember having watched one of their movies over a hundred times! I think it was “The Nutcracker Suite.” That was my all-time favorite Christmas Movie until I was about ten! My brother used to tease me because I would watch it even if it was summer. So I had to wait until September until I could start watching it again.

Bioman
To complement your Shaider fix, here is a clip from Bioman. This is the highlight of the Friday afternoon fare from IBC 13 in the early nineties. Each kid looked forward to watching the five Japanese superheroes.
The story begins when two androids named Peebo and Bio Robo came to earth by way of a falling star. Bio Robo gave out Bio Particles to people. These particles may be passed on to other generations. Meanwhile, the caretakers of the Bio Particles must find the new generation of Biomen in order to save the world from the growing threat of Doctor Man and his New Empire.
If you’re not already familiar with the characters, the Biomen are: Red One, Green Two, Blue Three, Yellow Four, and Pink Five. Who was your favorite character? Let us know!

The Pog King
Pog is the name of a game popularized in Hawaii in the 1930s by a fruit juice brand made from Passion Fruit, Orange, and Guava. Caps of POG bottles were originally used to play the game. In the Philippines, the Pog craze was resurrected by the Coca-Cola company.
With pog tournaments being held in malls all over the countries, parents were buying stacks of pog cards, kids drinking tons of coke to avail the free pog cards with it, teenagers trading, buying, stealing, and fighting over the limited edition series of pog cards.
There are several ways to enjoy pog cards such as collecting, trading, and bragging (which I did) but there are two main ways of playing pog cards. The original way of playing pog cards is by stacking the cards then hitting it with another pog card or the “slammer” (the collectible which only a few lucky ones had, it was the envy of every little boy), any card that would flip the opposite side would be property of the one who hit the pogs.
The “kanto” way of playing it was thru the “tex” style, wherein 2-3 players would put their “pamato” within 3 pog cards. The cards will then be thrown onto the air, and if any of the 3 cards landed on the opposite side of the two, then that would be the winning card. Above is a video of how the game is played.

Tropang Trumpo
Who can ever forget the best laughtrip show in ABC5 during the 90’s? Tropang Trumpo was the funniest show back then where they would have jokes and spoofs of different situations and shows. It was the Bubble Gang of the 90’s. The part that I’m sure everyone still remembers from that show is the United American Tiki-tiki song and “chicken” (with the matching actions with the hand).
Let me refresh your memory with the United American tiki-tiki song… United American Tiki-tiki, pampalusog ng inyong baby, United American, United American Tiki-tiki pang baby” I’m sure while you were singing it, you couldn’t help but do the dance as well. Hahahaha! I’m sure you guys will get LSS (last song syndrome) with this. Enjoy! Bwahahaha!

Fly for me! Just for me!
I remember the first time I saw the commercial of the Skydancers dolls, it was a feeling of “suuuuper wanting“, since it was something really different from the usual girl toys in the market (it can really fly!). Back then, everything was mostly about Barbie and all the stuff she can do/become. So the Skydancers dolls instantly became one of the cool toys that every girl wants, but unfortunately for me, my mom never bought me one (heck! even santa didn’t grant my wish -i got a Barbie instead. haha!).

Speaking of Japanese Superheroes
Aside from Masked Rider Black, our Filipino childhood was marked by watching Shaider. The show aired on IBC 13 during Fridays at 5:30pm.
Alexis, played by Japanese actor Sawamura Dai, is an archeologist student who discovered a disturbance Nazca Plain. He then becomes invited and trained by the Galactic Union Police to become the next Earth Space Sheriff. He is given the name Shaider, after the warrior who destroyed Fuuma Le-Ar in the past. He was accompanied by his best friend Annie in his exploits with Fuuma Le-Ar.
Voice cast includes Vincent Gutierrez as Shaider, Grace Cornel as Annie, and Maynard Llames as Fuuma Le-ar in the Philippine dubbed version.
Special thanks to the folks at Wikipedia for the filmography of Shaider. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaider
