Smokey Mountain High

January 3, 2007

“Kailan/Kailan mo ba mapapansin ang aking lihim/Kahit anong gawing lambing/Di mo pinapansin”. These are the opening lyrics of my then favorite song, ‘Kailan’ sung by the teenage pop group organized by Ryan Cayabyab. Ryan christened the group as Smokey Mountain, yes after the famous dumpsite (in the Philippines). The group was composed ofTony Lambino, James Coronel (thanks lovelygirl!), Geneva Cruz, and Jeffrey Hidalgo.

The group disbanded after releasing one album. Geneva worked on a separate album and also got offers endorsing the fashion watch Swatch, Tony joined the cast of Ang Tv, and it took Jeffrey a good seven years before returning to the music business. James, however, decided to try again the whole teenage singing group thing. Two years after the first batch of Smokey Mountain disbanded, Smokey Mountain was revived this time with James, Chedi Guevarra, and Banig.

    Smokey Mountain me likey! weeee!!

We even have a cassette tape of their album at home..dont know if its still working

I certainly love their coconut song and i also like the classic song that they have in their album “Paraiso” thats cuz i heard it again in a group singing competition that my friends joined..

Paraiso, help me make a stand
Paraiso, take me by the hand
    Paraiso, make the world understand
That if I could see a single bird
    What a joy!
This tired and hungry land could expect
Some truth and hope and respect
From the rest of the world

whooo!! the best! makes me wanna sing again haha!

I’m also a big fan of Smokey Mountain first batch but I love Jeffrey Hidalgo the best. He wasn’t actually gone from the music scene after the group disbanded because he released his first solo album in 1993. It was entitled, I’ll Be Your Friend and this was released under Viva Records. He was also part of Viva’s TV sitcom, 17 Bernard Club which was also shown in 1993. He had several solo albums thereafter: Intimate Mood (Star Records, 1998), Can This Be Love? (Star Records, 2000) and Jeffrey 05. He also made other TV, movie and music projects after SM. FYI. If you have other questions or you want to have updates about Jeffrey, I’m just an e-mail away. Thanks and more power!

i too am a big fan of the smokey mountain, ung orig. back in high school hehe. they also sung “Mama” which is a song about an OFW mom-daughter relationship, and it was sung by geneva in an international competition in russia where she won the grand prize. paraiso (by the 2nd batch) also won in an intenational competition (2nd best song, natalo ng isang australian), at yung smokey mountain as a group ang nagwagi sa best performer. “kailan” “can this be love” “da coconut nut” “mama” ang galing talaga ni mr. c!!! yeah, i remember 14k. kasama dun si jolina magdangal.
