Jelly Shoes

Right before the Havaianas slippers sensation hit the Philippine market, we were overtook with joy with this special fashion must-have.
It was squishy, shiny, and pretty to look at.
‘Lo and behold, the jelly sandals. I myself owned a pair (in mermaid green, no less). In the nineties, these were matched with bootleg jeans or with skorts . I have a theory that the jelly shoe manufacturers have recycled this jelly phenomenon and has turned a dying business to something interesting: Crocs.

I owned a pair of these too! Thw ones I owned were lilac and it was even glittery and had little, bright-colored shapes in the soles! ^.^

yeah, Crocs lookes exacty like it! although Crocs has this etxra layer that makes the sole VERY soft. haha but unfortunatly, they are expensive, slippers for at least P2000.. Havaianas for now haha

I had these too. One time, I wore my a tad bit too small jelly shoes while playing the whole afternoon and I got a blister. Haha. But they really are one of the best!

Here’s a nice fact for the girls…Crocs has crossed another fashion boundary, they’ve created ballet flats made out of plastic. It’s so cute and relatively inexpensive. My classmate swears that it’s the best thing that has happened to her feet.

I had a clear pair much like the ones shown above, but with sparkles in the “plastique”. I LOVED those shoes…
Not to “burst your fashion-decade bubble” but, though these were still around in the 90’s, they actually first made a big splash onto the popular fashion scene in the 80’s. That was when I got my first pair at K-Mart for about $4. It was also my last pair because, although they were clear and went with everything, they were not all that comfortable.

Pros-
They’re, cute, fun, colorful, waterproof and cheap. Great for beach/pool. Little girls love them. At under $5/pr. you could own a whole rainbow of shoes for under $30.
Cons-
(as fen said) not very environmentally friendly; not a breathable material (boy, do they make your feet sweat!); offer no arch support; not the safest shoes in the world (think of the crocs getting caught in escalators and eating children’s feet- less danger here because the shoes are much less bulky and fewer people are wearing them).
Unless they come up with some real design improvements, I don’t imagine I’ll be buying any more jellies. Just like those awful polyester knits, they’ll have to rely on a “new generation” that doesn’t remember them from the first time around. One season of sweating in that stuff and it’s gone the next because no one will buy it!

Reminds me of some other Stupid Shoes I’ve worn!

Hey 90s kid! If you want a pair of ballerina Crocs, they’re available in Rustan’s (Makati and Shangri-La branch). It costs 1,200 pesos per pair.
Also, I found a brand that sells plastic shoes. Go to http://www.melissaphilippines.com.
Their most affordable pair of rubber sandals are at 1,999 pesos…pricier that Crocs and Havaianas. Hope it helps!

I haven’t seen another jelly sandal (similar to the one above). Maybe you should check the local Janylyn/So Fab/Manels.

You all aught to check out Melissausa.com and Grendhausa.com They are makers of the original jelly shoe that debuted in 1979. It’s a company from Brazil. Now they have really off the wall styles in pointed toe pumps, and flats. And the original designs. Also check ebay periodically.
