TV Rip-offs
Philippine film and television has this odd culture of imitating story lines from the US and applying it to the local setting. Let’s see what rip-offs we can recall: Tanghalan ng Kampeon with Star Search, Tabing Ilog with Dawson’s Creek, and Buttercup with Friends. The best rip-off ever was Anna Karenina.
For the literati, Anna Karenina is the book that cemented Leo Tolstoy’s career as a writer. For us normal people, Annakarenina is the Sunday soap opera popularized by GMA-7 where it is starred by the then “hot” teen triumvirate–Kim delos Santos who plays the role of Nina, Antoinette Taus (sister to Tom Taus aka Cedie) plays the role of Anna, and Sunshine Dizon (best known as Bakekang nowadays) plays Karen.
Of course, riding along with these girls’ rise to stardom are their male counterparts. For six or so years, we’ve seen the development of Antoinette-Dingdong, Sunshine-Polo, and Kim-Dino. If you have a sharp memory you’ll notice that Maui Taylor (pre-surgery) was in this too.
I continued to patronize the show until Love to Love came along. Har, har.

Now & Then: Tom Taus
When I saw these before and after pictures, my heart stopped. It was nearly as bad as my reaction towards seeing Daniel Radcliffe’s tush in a play he recently starred in. I mean, look at Tom Taus’s abs. How’d he do that?

Spice girls on the loose!
Since the Spice girls were popular during the 90’s, other kids couldn’t help, but act and look like them. Look at these kids, they look soooo much like the get-up of the Spice girls! Hahaha!

5andUp
This was the show that made my Saturday mornings substantial and interesting. I was able to learn a lot of things that were helpful, not only to the school/academic stuff, but they made the idea of learning cool (probably one of the reasons why I became a nerd. Haha). They featured places, people and new stuff in a manner that was really relate-able to kids, since their anchors were kids. Hmm. I even know a few people who only watch 5andUp because of a certain cutie. Hehe.
Anyhoo, if you wanna get updates on the show and its members, you can find then at this site: http://www.probeprod.com/5andup/about. You can even be a contributor to their site and add articles, that is if they approve of your membership. But if you were and Upper or an Uppie you can easily be a part of the site. ![]()

Sanrio in the 90s

Of the many characters Sanrio created, Pochacco one of the best to represent the nineties. Pochacco “grew up” in the nineties. He is drawn as a white dog with black floppy ears, but no visible mouth. He is often dressed in athletic attire, as he has a sporty and playful personality. He is the best three-on-three basketball player on the playground and a good goalie as well. His favorite food are banana ice cream and carrots (a vegetarian dog!)
Want to know which sanrio character are you? Take the test! http://guru.theotaku.com/view.php?action=retrieve&id=70

It’s Crash Bandicoot time!
If Sega had Sonic and Nintendo had Mario, back then, Sony had CRASH BANDICOOT. Crash Bandicoot was one of the first platform games which rocked the world. The game had cool levels, outrageous enemies, and lots of FUN. What was cool about it was that Crash had the ability to become invincible with some mask he needed to wear. (Aboombaga!)

It’s Parappa the Rapper time!
Kick, punch, it’s all in the mind. If you want me to teach ya, I’ll do ya fine. Chop, chop, chop! –Master Onion
These are the famous lines in one of the most popular casual rhythm-based button-mashing addicting game of all time - Parappa the Rapper! This first rhythm-based PS1 game had a simple story with the easiest mission: press the corresponding buttons at the correct time.
By doing so, Parappa, who happens to be a paper-thin rapping dog, would progress in the story and complete his mission of winning the heart of his lover, Sunny Funny. Oh my gosh! HAHA! Simple as it may sound, this game is best remembered for its unique gameplay, cool graphic design, outrageous characters, and crazy plot.
