Thalia conquered the Filipino TV screen for almost a decade. She was featured in Marimar, Maria la del Barrio, and Maria Mercedes.
It was her telenovela, Marimar, that began the Filipino addiction for telenovelas. In a world devoid of pirated DVDs, Marimar gained a solid following from wives and daughters. They were enchanted by Thalia’s innocence and beauty. It helped that the
show was from Mexico because Filipinos related more to the plot of the story. Filipinos loved the fact the Marimar was an underdog and as the story progressed she rose above the ‘pang-aapi’ of her mother-in-law.
Sometimes the twists and turns of the story became hard to believe because they were unrealistic. I remember being annoyed when Senora Santibanez survived the fire in their home. Just when I thought that all was well for Marimar and Sergio, Senora Santibanez resurrects from the dead. Whew. But I have to say, in spite of its excessive drama, Marimar kept me hooked.
