Smokey Mountain High

“Kailan/Kailan mo ba mapapansin ang aking lihim/Kahit anong gawing lambing/Di mo pinapansin”. These are the opening lyrics of my then favorite song, ‘Kailan’ sung by the teenage pop group organized by Ryan Cayabyab. Ryan christened the group as Smokey Mountain, yes after the famous dumpsite (in the Philippines). The group was composed ofTony Lambino, James Coronel (thanks lovelygirl!), Geneva Cruz, and Jeffrey Hidalgo.

The group disbanded after releasing one album. Geneva worked on a separate album and also got offers endorsing the fashion watch Swatch, Tony joined the cast of Ang Tv, and it took Jeffrey a good seven years before returning to the music business. James, however, decided to try again the whole teenage singing group thing. Two years after the first batch of Smokey Mountain disbanded, Smokey Mountain was revived this time with James, Chedi Guevarra, and Banig.

    Smokey Mountain me likey! weeee!!

We even have a cassette tape of their album at home..dont know if its still working

I certainly love their coconut song and i also like the classic song that they have in their album “Paraiso” thats cuz i heard it again in a group singing competition that my friends joined..

Paraiso, help me make a stand
Paraiso, take me by the hand
    Paraiso, make the world understand
That if I could see a single bird
    What a joy!
This tired and hungry land could expect
Some truth and hope and respect
From the rest of the world

whooo!! the best! makes me wanna sing again haha!

  • 8. surferchick  |  January 30, 2007 at 12:07 pm

Paraiso is indeed a moving song, I believe this was the best that the second batch of Smokey Mountain ever performed 😀

I’m also a big fan of Smokey Mountain first batch but I love Jeffrey Hidalgo the best. He wasn’t actually gone from the music scene after the group disbanded because he released his first solo album in 1993. It was entitled, I’ll Be Your Friend and this was released under Viva Records. He was also part of Viva’s TV sitcom, 17 Bernard Club which was also shown in 1993. He had several solo albums thereafter: Intimate Mood (Star Records, 1998), Can This Be Love? (Star Records, 2000) and Jeffrey 05. He also made other TV, movie and music projects after SM. FYI. If you have other questions or you want to have updates about Jeffrey, I’m just an e-mail away. Thanks and more power!

i too am a big fan of the smokey mountain, ung orig. back in high school hehe. they also sung “Mama” which is a song about an OFW mom-daughter relationship, and it was sung by geneva in an international competition in russia where she won the grand prize. paraiso (by the 2nd batch) also won in an intenational competition (2nd best song, natalo ng isang australian), at yung smokey mountain as a group ang nagwagi sa best performer. “kailan” “can this be love” “da coconut nut” “mama” ang galing talaga ni mr. c!!! yeah, i remember 14k. kasama dun si jolina magdangal.

Too many mistakes. I really laughed so hard after reading this article. The group wasn’t disbanded after releasing one album, the 3 members Geneva Cruz, Jeffrey Hidalgo, and Tony Lambino left the group for different reasons. The group’s creator Ryan Cayabyab replaced them with Jayson Angangan, Chedi Vergara (not Guevarra), and Shar Santos, not BANIG! Banig was a solo performer and never became a part of the group.

Reminscin’ now. Si James Coronel I heard sa call center sya before dunno now… si Tony naman sa IRRI sya ngayon, studied abroad before. Naabutan ko yung 2nd batch I took voice lessons kase sa Sunvar Plaza (music studio ni Mr.C) I remember I was 11 yrs. old yata at that time I even asked my mom to get James Coronel’s autograph. Si Ms. Annie Quintos yung voice teacher ko. I like the love team of Geneva and Tony. Sad ako nung nawala na yung 1st batch, but I still did support the 2nd batch. Sina Chedi and James I love their song Kahit Habang Buhay. I have the Smokey Mountain’s best hits cd, now playing their music at work. 🙂 #feelingnostalgic

RSS Return of the Nineties by Kidswereus

  • Kidswereus Recalls (and ambitiously recommends) March 4, 2008
It’s been a year since we’ve begun this blog. Wahoo! It’s time to bring back the love to the next batch of SEO experts, bloggers, and internet marketers! This year’s theme is more social-oriented. I guess this idea came from our professor who thinks that the Internet is more than an all-in-one medium that integrates […]
  • Pop Swatch! November 1, 2007
They were funky, overly large, and well cute.  The Pop Swatch was born in the 80’s but it got to Manila during the nineties. My cousin was obsessed with collecting all the straps that would match. We would always pass by Gift Gate in the Greenhills Shopping Arcade so that we would see the new […]
  • Oh Tokyo! October 29, 2007
The show’s goal was simple: to give the Pinoys an overview of the Japanese culture. We love it for the host’s flawless translation of Japanese to Filipino. It also helps that she speaks in a sing-song voice while she asks the Tokyo-dwellers about their day-to-day living. Sad to say, this show stopped airing in RJ […]

  • For kicks: Guess this 90s Telenovela October 27, 2007
The year was 1998 and we, as a nation, have just recovered from the Thalia telenovela avalanche. We needed a change of pace so here’s a soap whose heroine is a child. Her height is as tiny as her voice! I love her show-gum smile and lengthy lashes. The story was interesting in the beginning: […]
